Twelve of the 100 most recent UK reviews for this CeraVe night lotion give it one or two stars. Read them one at a time and something odd turns up: seven of the twelve never get as far as the formula. They are about a crushed box, a missing second tube, a smell that was not right this time, or a flat accusation that the tube was fake. Only five of the hundred criticise what the lotion actually does on the face, and even those five split between "too thin for my dry skin" and "broke me out".

That matters because it changes how you read the headline numbers. The listing carries a 4.6-star lifetime average across 20,081 ratings. Seven of the Twelve Bad Reviews Never Reach the Formula

The remaining five low scores are about the lotion. Jack Mason (2 stars, oily skin, seborrheic dermatitis) got "the worst breakout on my nose I've ever had" despite the non-comedogenic label. What Is Actually in the 52 ml Tube

The box says it plainly: Facial Moisturising Lotion, PM, for normal to dry skin, with 3 essential ceramides, niacinamide and hyaluronic acid, fragrance free and non-comedogenic, 52 ml. The listing adds that it was developed with dermatologists and uses CeraVe's patented MVE technology to release moisture gradually, with a claim of 24-hour hydration. One listing image shows the texture as a translucent gel-cream rather than a thick white cream, which lines up with how buyers describe it.

The delivery is a pump on a soft tube, and buyers like the format when it works. L R likes the pump packaging, and Jenny Wallace uses "1 pump for my face and neck". The pump is also the mechanical weak point in this review set: 3 of the 100 reviews report a faulty one. curleyshirley says "within a week the pump thing has stopped working"; sparrow found the action variable, sometimes needing several presses; Bert had three broken across three tubes. Three in a hundred is not an epidemic, but it is the only hardware complaint here.

On what is not in the tube: no fragrance, and reviewers notice. 9 of the 100 reviews mention the lack of scent, all approvingly. Rodrigo Ferreira: "No strong fragrance, no burning sensation, no weird film." Also worth flagging: this is a night lotion with no SPF. One five-star reviewer praises its "SPF factor protection", which it does not have, so treat that as a mix-up with the AM version rather than a feature.

Lightweight Is the Word 23 Reviewers Reach For

If there is one thing this review set agrees on, it is the texture. 23 of the 100 reviews describe the lotion as light, lightweight, non-greasy, or some combination, and none of them means it as a criticism. Andrew, whose review is the most-upvoted in the batch at 24 helpful votes, puts it as "Feels like giving your face a glass of water before bed". Amazon Customer (February 2025) is blunter: "It's like water on my face. Non-sticky and absorbs immediately."

The practical upshot is that it layers. Rodrigo Ferreira notes "It also layers well with serums without pilling", Mr C D wears it under makeup despite the PM label, and RebeccaD97, who describes her own skin as greasy, still gets on with it: "It absorbs easily, not greasy at all and I have greasy skin." That is a wider audience than the box suggests.

How long the pump lasts follows from the same property. Ana, a two-year user, says "one bottle is enough for 2-3 months", and Josefa gets around two months of daily use. Brighde, who uses it morning and night, is at the other end: "A tube of the facial product lasts about a month." So plan on one to three months from 52 ml depending on whether you use it once or twice a day. George's tip: use too much and "you will be rubbing it in for a while and then your face will feel wet."

Sensitive Skin, Seb Derm and Recovering From a Reaction

The strongest stories in the batch come from people whose skin was already in trouble. 10 of the 100 reviews name sensitive skin specifically and every one of those ten is positive. Paisley Paige (5 helpful votes) came to it on a dermatologist's recommendation after a Korean skincare regime left her skin flared and irritated. Johanna, in her fifties, reached for it after an allergic reaction left her skin in a terrible state for two weeks and says it "was the only moisturiser I've been able to use - morning and night".

James M's review is the most detailed on a named condition. Dealing with seborrheic dermatitis around his chin, mouth, nose folds and eyebrows, he reports "the dry flaky patches looked massively reduced during the day, to the point where they were barely noticeable when I went out", with no stinging around the eyes. He is careful to add "It hasn't magically cured everything overnight". Note that Jack Mason, who also has seb derm but oily skin, had the opposite result and broke out. Same condition, different skin type, opposite outcome, which is a fair summary of why "non-comedogenic" on a box is a claim and not a promise.

The breakout count overall: 5 of the 100 reviews report spots or a reaction (Jack Mason, Moo, Katie, Olivia and Mai77), and two of those five suspect the tube was not genuine. Katie: "Wanted to love this but it tends to make my skin breakout". If you are acne-prone and oily, this is the number to weigh, and it is small but not zero.

Too Thin for Properly Dry Skin? Nine Buyers Think So

The one real disagreement in the reviews is about richness. 9 of the 100 say the lotion is thinner, or less moisturising through the night and next day, than they wanted. Anna (2 stars) makes the sharpest version of the case: she owns the CeraVe moisturising cream in the pump bottle and says "this is the same consistency, texture and smell making me think that Cerave have simply stuck 'night' on the bottle. Not what I'd expect from a dry skin night cream as it's quite a thin consistency." Her verdict: "if you have combo/normal skin this would be great. But I have dry skin that clogs easily and whilst this hasn't clogged my pores it hasn't helped my dry skin either."

The four-star crowd say the same thing more gently. claudia capocciama: "It made my skin soft but it got tight towards the end of the day. This is probably best used in spring/summer as a light moisturiser." Pepperpot31, with mature dry skin, docks a star because it does not last through the day, and SM suggests pairing it with a serum. Even L R, a five-star user of many years, says "I need something slightly heavier for the winter personally".

Against that, the "for dry skin" claim does have defenders. lechef calls it "great when the weather/wind is really cold and your face feels really dry and sore", and Chinwe says it has kept her face moisturised through dry weather. Our read: for normal, combination or mildly dry skin, the reviews back the box. For very dry, mature or flaky skin in winter, most people who raise the point want a serum underneath or a heavier cream on top. Only Toni, with combination skin, found it "sits heavy on my face", so the risk runs almost entirely in the "too light" direction.

Value: 11 Call It Cheap, 9 Call It Small

Price shows up in 20 of the 100 reviews and the crowd splits almost down the middle. 11 reviewers say it is good value, a sensible price, or cheap for what it is (Kerry Reviews, Josefa and Hazel Patterson among them). 9 say the tube is too small for the money, and several of those still gave four or five stars. Mike, at 4 stars: "I haven't got anything bad to say about the actual product it's great but I am disappointed with the price for the size you get." Mr M gave five stars and still wished there was more in the container.

Shameless Spendaholic (5 stars, 4 helpful votes) makes the comparison Anna hinted at: "this is the standard Moisturising Lotion (which is brilliant value for money) with added Niacinimide, a cheap ingredient. In my mind it's extremely overpriced." That same reviewer says the niacinamide does wonders for their skin and still calls it spendy. Ana and Johanna both wish CeraVe sold a bigger size, which is a fair ask for a product people use for years.

The counterweight is longevity: at one pump per application, buyers who tracked it got one to three months from a tube. Check today's price on Amazon and divide by the two months most once-a-day users report; that per-night figure is the number that actually matters, not the size printed on the box.
