Why winter does this to hair

Three things have to line up, and a UK winter lines them all up at once. First, the air has to be dry. Moisture in the air quietly drains charge away, which is why the same routine causes nothing in July. Once central heating runs all day, indoor humidity drops well below outdoor levels and hair dries out with it.

Second, something has to rub. Wool, acrylic and polyester exchange electrons readily with hair, and a bobble hat pulled on and off six times a day is a lot of rubbing; a plastic brush does the same from the other direction. Third, the hair itself has to be dry, because dry hair holds the charge it is given. Every strand ends up carrying the same charge, like charges repel, and the hair stands up to get away from itself.

That is why no single product fixes static. Moisturise the hair, change the fabrics and raise the humidity, and the problem mostly disappears.

Month by month, September to April

Timing moves by a few weeks between a coastal flat in Cornwall and a stone house in Aberdeen, and by a fortnight between a mild year and a cold one. Use the trigger, not the date: the trigger is the heating going on.

September

October

The shoulder month, and the one that matters most. Most UK households switch the heating on in mid-October, and within a fortnight the indoor air is dry enough to start the process. The season opens. Wool comes out, radiators run morning and evening, and if you skipped October this is the month you notice the halo when the hat comes off. Everything in the procedure still works; you are just starting from behind.

December

Every cause is at full strength: heating on all day, party blow-dries, thick knits, and hair that has had six weeks of dry air. Keep the mask weekly and dry hair fully before it goes under a hat.

January

The peak, by some distance. This is the driest indoor air of the year and hair has been losing moisture since October. The procedure: a routine that stops the crackle

1. Rebuild the moisture

Swap to a hydrating conditioner for the season and leave it on for the full time the bottle suggests. 5. Line the hat, change the scarf

6. Fix it on the spot

For static that has already started, spray a light-hold hairspray onto the brush or your palms and smooth over the top layer; the weight settles the strands without the stiff finish of spraying the head. A pea-sized dab of hand cream rubbed into the palms until it has almost vanished does the same job. 7. Change the bedroom

What goes wrong and how to recover

Oil at the roots. Hair oil kills static, so people work it in everywhere and have flat, greasy roots by lunchtime. Recovery: a clarifying wash, then oil on the ends only, pressed on from the palms rather than combed through.

Dryer sheet build-up. Daily use leaves a fabric-softener film that dulls hair and can itch a sensitive scalp. Keep it for emergencies, never rub it on the scalp, and clarify at the next wash if hair has gone dull and heavy.

Anti-static laundry sprays on the head. Fabric sprays are not formulated for skin. If one has been used near the scalp and it stings or flakes, wash it out and stop; hairspray on the brush does the same job without the risk.

Too much leave-in on fine hair. It goes limp and looks unwashed by the afternoon. Halve the amount and apply to the bottom two-thirds only, on damp hair.

Over-washing to chase the clean feeling. Static gets worse, because every wash removes the oil that was helping. Stretch the washes back out and use dry shampoo on the in-between days.
